Boxing legend Dwight Muhammad Qawi, known for his relentless fighting style and inspirational rise from adversity, has passed away at the age of 72. Nicknamed “The Camden Buzzsaw,” Qawi was a feared champion in both the light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions.
Born Dwight Braxton on January 5, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Qawi’s early years was marked with hardship. A troubled youth led to time in prison, but it was there he discovered a new purpose in life -boxing and began transforming his life. After training under Joe Frazier’s camp, he turned professional in 1978 and quickly made a name for himself.
His aggressive, inside-fighting style and short but powerful stature earned him his iconic nickname. He would go on to become one of the most respected pressure fighters in boxing history.
In 1981, Qawi defeated Matthew Saad Muhammad to win the WBC Light Heavyweight Title. He later captured the WBA Cruiserweight Title in 1985 after a victory over Piet Crous. His 1986 bout against Evander Holyfield remains one of the most legendary cruiserweight fights ever.
Qawi’s impact was felt far beyond his victories. Standing just 5'7", he defied physical expectations and inspired future fighters like Mike Tyson and Bernard Hopkins to believe in their abilities regardless of stature. His induction into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame cemented his influence on the sport.
Boxing greats and fans alike paid tribute. “He brought the fight to you—every single round,” said Holyfield. “Qawi made you earn every inch.” CNN called him “a pioneer of power in motion.” ESPN included his battles in the list of best cruiserweight showdowns of all time.
Qawi’s remarkable journey from incarceration to becoming international champion stands as one of the most influencing stories. His passion, power, and pressure changed how people viewed small fighters, and his legacy will continue to motivate generations.
