Bobby Jenks during his iconic run with the Chicago White Sox, remembered for his powerful fastballs and 2005 World Series performance |
On July 4, 2025, the baseball world lost one of its fiercest competitors and gentlest souls—Bobby Jenks, former Chicago White Sox closer and two-time All-Star, passed away at the age of 44 in Sintra, Portugal after battling stomach cancer.
Jenks was known for his 102 mph fastball, towering presence, and cool demeanor under pressure. Off the field, teammates described him as a “big teddy bear.”
He is survived by his wife Eleni Tzitzivacos, their children Zeno and Kate, and four children from a previous marriage: Cuma, Nolan, Rylan, and Jackson. He had relocated to Portugal during treatment to be closer to Eleni's family.
“You play for the love of the game, the joy of it. I’m playing to be a world champion—and that’s what I wanted to do from the time I picked up a baseball.”
His passing comes just days before the White Sox's 20-year reunion of the 2005 championship team. His absence will be deeply felt.
According to ESPN’s official report on Bobby Jenks’ death, the former All-Star passed away unexpectedly due to heart complications.
